Silent Wednesday - Week 23 - Marvel vs DC

Marvel vs DC - The Movie War

This is only about the movies and TV series. We'll not talk about the comicbooks and it's not a debate who's characters are better. We're talking about which studio is making a bigger impact. Also, we are not talking about animated films.

There is this big debate, which is better - DC or Marvel. Of course there are two different fandoms, which will viciously defend their favourite. But the idea is to be objective and say things how they are, not to take sides. If one is doing better, why is that?

Let's take a look at what both companies have given us in the past few years.

Marvel

20 years ago Marvel had some rough times and had to sell a lot of it's titles to other companies. So now Sony and Fox own the rights to major names like Spider-Man and X-Men. But still, Marvel are co-producers.

For the past 14 years, as co-producers, Marvel has 5 Spider-Man titles, 7 X-Men films (or X-Men related), 2 Punishers, 2 Ghost Riders, 2 Fantastic Four films, 3 Blade flicks and a few other minor films not really worth mentioning (Daredevil, Elektra, Man-Thing). And we are waiting to see X-Men: Days of Future Past, Fantastic Four reboot and the sequels to The Amazing Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 Review

Really sweet movie, tell you that. I mean, have you seen Emma Stone's eyes? Really big and hypnotizing. And also Spider-man was there and he is a cool guy. You have to go watch it.

Spider-Man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. Captain America and Superman are big and popular, but your friendly neighbourhood web-slinger is kinder, funnier and is a regular guy under the costume. A person with emotions, problematic personal life, hard childhood, awkward teen years and love issues. It's easier to picture yourself as Spider-Man than Iron Man, because he is more down to earth and more human. That's why we love him.

When we were kids we had the Animated Series - they made me start the comicbooks. Then we got the Tobey Maguire trilogy. Big movies which will remain a big part of Marvel movies history (except for Spider-Man 3 - that movie sucked). But those three films didn't feel exactly like I was watching the Spidey I remember.

They were less funnier and M.J. wasn't hot. Tobey is a good actor, but was not exactly perfect for the role. But Garfield on the other hand, proved he is worthy and he can become the real web-slinger, like the one from the books.

The Return of The First Avenger

When I went to see the Captain America: The Winter Soldier I wasn't expecting much. The First Avenger  was kind of incomplete, but not a bad movie in general. Yet, people don't talk about it much. So I wasn't expecting for Marvel to make the sequel any better. They prove me wrong.

What I saw was something quite different. It grabbed me from the beginning and held me until the end. And after the success of Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, I must say - Phase 2 is a lot better. This time it's not just some filler movies, but ones which want to dominate the Box Office.

What Really Got me?

First of all - Captain America is becoming more and more mature. You see his struggle with living in this modern world. It's been two years since he was defrosted, but that 70-year gap is hard to fill. Not only Cap has grown up, but Chris Evans as well. When I first saw him it was back in 2001 in Not Another Teen Movie he was the typical Jock. Since then he has played in many comedies and romantic films, but this is different.

Happy New Year!

It's been a few weeks since our last post, but please don't be mad. It was the holidays and we took a small break. It is now time for a fresh start. Will 2014 be any better? Will it bring us more joy? We'll have wait and see. Meanwhile, let's check out the movies coming out in 2014.

Like every recent year, there will be a lot of fun films for the comicbook fans. It's not going to be as exciting as 2015 (Avengers 2, Batman vs Superman, Star Wars 7), but we'll still see some brilliant productions, which will break the box office and make  some people even richer.

Comic book Films 

The Dark World

After the first movie I wasn't that excited about the sequel. Just another film with a lot of action, a few silly scenes and a lot of handsome men (and then people are saying comicbooks are only for men... yeah right). I didn't expect anything deep or meaningful.

Then I saw the first trailer - it looked a little bit darker. I guess all marvel characters, and not only, are becoming a little bit darker with time, so they can look deeper and gain a bigger audience. Some succeed, other just make another bad film, but with darker colours. So I got intrigued and gave it a chance.

Highlights of Comic-Con 2013

Comic-Con International: San Diego or simply known as Comic-Con, is the largest convention of it's kind in the world. Fans from all over the world can go and see the casts of some of their favourite shows, movies, video games, the creators of their favourite comicbooks, novels and etc. This is the place where you can get your books signs, get exclusive information, meet world-famous artists, the place where you can show what amazing costume you have created (oh yeah, everybody is wearing a costume).

Every year we get the latest info for your long-expecting film here. There are videos that are exclusive only for the visitors, but even so, the news spreads quicker than a tropical disease. This year is no different than before. The good thing is, Hollywood has taken over Comic-Con, which means we can have exclusive info about the movies and shows we have been waiting for. And the internet has exploded with news. Look at Google Trends and you will know, that I am not kidding.
